Lenders lost a lot of money by not verifying such documents.

Just to make sure the lenders learned their lesson, the government is passing laws that they verify your income.

As stated above, it’s common practice to have you sign the 4506-T so they can get the IRS transcripts to confirm the numbers match the copy you give them.

Yes, they make you fill out IRS form 4506 and it may be verified with the IRS. With all the mortgage fraud in the last few years, they are verifying more and more tax returns with the IRS.
