16 Under Rush Softball take third place in Fall Kickoff Classic.
The WV Rush 16u softball team participated in their last tournament of the year, taking the third place trophy at the Covington Fall Kickoff Classic on July 28-29.
The Rush started slowly, but eventually got it together and ended the day with a satisfying 6-4 victory over the Loudon Valley Storm. The team finished pool play with a 1-2 record and earned the #2 seed in their bracket.
In Sunday?s championship round, the Rush came ready to play. Sparked by an excellent effort from starting pitcher Christine Czekaj and a smothering defense, the Rush shut out the Giles County Mustangs 2-0 and advanced to the semi-finals.
Playing for a berth in the championship game, the Rush hung tough and battled the powerhouse Extreme Force Red team tooth and nail. After the dust had settled, the scoreboard showed the Rush on the short end of a 1-0 score. The defense again was stellar, especially up the middle with catcher Cynthia Huffman, shortstop Danielle ?Jersey? Gessie, second baseman Kala Richardson, and centerfielder Whitley Maro. Pitcher Czekaj took the hard luck loss, but again hurled an outstanding game.
Top hitters on the weekend included right fielder Sarah Mathis (4-9, two doubles, one triple), Maro (2-7, ground rule double; within 5 feet of clearing the fence), third baseman Ashley Highlander (4-11) and Gessie (4-14).
Manager Jeff Cobb and coach Tom Shoemaker were extremely proud of the effort and attitude displayed by the girls this year. All season long, opponents were complementary of our team?s attitude and hustle, and they appreciated our good sportsmanship. The coaches look forward to the majority of the team returning intact next year for another great season of Rush 16u softball.

They have a big support base and the parents should be proud of them. They cheer and everyone has a good time. This is an example of what the Rush exemplifies---hard work+dedication=success."
