BRISTOL, Va. -- Gate City used full-court pressure to wear down James River and free throws to put the Knights away Saturday at Virginia High School.

The Blue Devils came away with a 76-66 victory in a Division 2, Group A quarterfinal game and advance to the state semifinals at 12:15 p.m., Friday at the Siegel Center in Richmond, where they will face the winner of a Saturday night game between King William and Appomattox.

The Blue Devils took advantage of the return of Jamie Hackney at the start of the fourth quarter to stretch a tentative 51-49 lead to 59-52 as Hackney got six quick points to lead an 8-3 run in the first 2:05 of the quarter.

Tihlee Anderson then took over, scoring 13 fourth-quarter points -- including 9 of 10 from the foul line.

"I heard them telling each other they were tired,'' said Hackney, who finished with 22 points. "That's one of our goals, to wear them down.'' Anderson made 14 of 17 foul shots and Hackney was 6 of 6. They made 20 of 23 between them, while James River was just 12 of 28.

"We work on our free throws,'' said Hackney. "It helps to be able to make them, especially at this time of the year.''

"We have been off and on with our free throws,'' said Gate City coach Scott Vermillion, whose team finished 23 of 30 overall from the foul line. "We have some guys who are good at shooting them. They all like to shoot free throws.''

"That's probably the most I have made in a game,'' said Anderson, a 5-9 junior guard who said his 28 points may have been a season high for him. "I had trouble with them earlier in the season.'' "He had a heckuva game,'' said Vermillion of Anderson's effort.

But so did Hackney, who went to the bench with over three minutes left in the third quarter after picking up his fourth foul on a questionable call.

"That was frustrating,'' said Hackney, "but I felt fresh when I came back.''

"That was big, what Jamie did there,'' said Anderson. "He did a good job of playing with four fouls.''

James River leading scorer Corey Ware was not as lucky. He fouled out with 4:39 left to play and his team down 63-55.

"That was tough,'' said James River coach Mike Goad. "He's a kid who averages 19 or 20 points a game and we didn't have him there at the end.''

The free throw shooting was also a key factor, said Goad.

"We've had games when we have shot them well, but we obviously didn't today,'' said Goad, whose team finished 23-4.

Goad said Gate City (22-5) was good, but that George Wythe is better.

"George Wythe is quicker, faster and has good ball handlers,'' said Goad. "They also have senior leadership. They are tough. They'll be hard to beat.''

George Wythe won Friday night over Castlewood, 100-68 and will play the winner of a game between Buckingham and Washington & Lee on Saturday.

The winners will meet for the title Saturday at 5 p.m.

"We aren't thinking of George Wythe yet,'' said Vermillion. "We'll see who wins between King William and Appomattox and get ready for them.''

"It's good to get back to Richmond,'' said Hackney, "especially in my senior year. We're pretty excited about it.''

Matt Bays added eight points for Gate City, while James River was led by Andrew Tucker's 13 points. Ethan Humphreys and Patrick Bennett had 12 each and Corey Ware 10. Oliver Suprenaunt added 9.

D-1 Greyhounds/ Beckley Head Coach and Organizer Mike Fowlkes joins the Rush

The West Virginia Rush AAU Basketball program has taken huge steps in becoming" THE" basketball program of choice in the state of West Virginia.

The Rush are proud to announce the new involvement of Mike Fowlkes of Beckley in our program. Mike has been a huge player in the Beckley AAU programs in the past and for the last two seasons has run or been involved with the Beckley D-1 Greyhounds.

Seth McClung said of Mike, " Mike helps us get the talent in Beckley, He is also someone who has had a lot of success and experience in AAU in the State of West Virginia." "We are excited about our new relationship with him."

President of the Rush Bruce Lowman commented, "I am extremely excited that Coach Fowlkes will be a part of the Rush from now into the future. Coach Fowlkes has a wealth of experience and coaching knowledge that will help make our program one of, if not the top AAU program in the state. He has been a valuable resource this year to our program, sharing his wisdom with me whenever I ask. Anyone who knows anything about the Greyhounds knows the impact Mike has had on the kids that have been fortunate enough to be a part of one of his teams.

Expect some more changes to be made to the Rush teams for next season, including the addition of a few teams. We are also looking for more volunteers contact the Rush if interested
